Maxed Out: Hard Times, Easy Credit and the Era of Predatory Lenders (2006)

Author and filmmaker James D. Scurlock takes on the powerful financial industry in an insightful and infuriating documentary about credit card debt in America. As he crisscrosses the United States, Scurlock interviews average Americans whose lives have been ruined by predatory financial lenders. His subjects are from all walks of life--everyone from retired widows in the Midwest, to poverty-stricken Southerners, to two college students who commit suicide due to their insurmountable bills. Scurlock exposes the extortionate rates of the credit card companies, and reveals their practice of preying upon the very people who are least likely to be able to pay their debts. His interviews with a Harvard law professor, debt collectors, and self-help "financial gurus" further expose the shocking corruption within the financial system and the toxic ties between the corporations and the United States government. The subject matter is gripping enough, but Scurlock ups the entertainment value with a pop-music soundtrack and by splicing in archival footage from educational films. MAXED OUT carries an urgent message for the future of America. Scurlock's battle cry is: grab the scissors and destroy your plastic--before it destroys you.

UNCOUNTED
Dir. David Earnhardt US 2007

Over the next several months the Red Vic Movie House will be presenting various films dealing with the subject of the critically important impending election. We are calling this ongoing series: COUNTDOWN TO REGIME CHANGE. UNCOUNTED is a worthy kick off to this series. UNCOUNTED is an explosive new documentary that shows how the election fraud that changed the outcome of the 2004 election led to an even greater fraud in 2006 and now looms as an unbridled threat to the outcome of the 2008 election. This controversial film examines in factual, logical, and yet startling terms how easy it is to change election outcomes and undermine election integrity across the U.S. Dir. David Earnhardt will be present at all screenings for Q & A!

THURSDAY 28 FEBUARY 2008 at 7:30 PM on CHANNEL 26, Comcast Marin

UNCOUNTED is an explosive new documentary that shows how the election fraud that changed the outcome of the 2004 election led to even greater fraud in 2006 - and now looms as an unbridled threat to the outcome of the 2008 election. This controversial feature length film by Emmy award-winning director David Earnhardt examines in factual, logical, and yet startling terms how easy it is to change election outcomes and undermine election integrity across the U.S. Noted computer programmers, statisticians, journalists, and experienced election officials provide the irrefutable proof.

UNCOUNTED shares well documented stories about the spine-chilling disregard for the right to vote in America. In Florida, computer programmer Clint Curtis is directed by his boss to create software that will ?flip? votes from one candidate to another. In Utah, County Clerk Bruce Funk is locked out of his office for raising questions about security flaws in electronic voting machines. Californian Steve Heller gets convicted of a felony after he leaks secret documents detailing illegal activities committed by a major voting machine company. And Tennessee entrepreneur, Athan Gibbs, finds verifiable voting a hard sell in America and dies before his dream of honest elections can be realized.

UNCOUNTED is a wakeup call to all Americans. Beyond increasing the public?s awareness, the film inspires greater citizen involvement in fixing a broken electoral system. As we approach the decisive election of 2008, UNCOUNTED will change how you feel about the way votes are counted in America.
