In all my years in the libertarian movement, I have never seen a more incredible lineup of speakers than those at our upcoming June 6-8 conference ?Restoring the Republic 2008: Foreign Policy and Civil Liberties.? As fantastic as last year?s conference was, I have no doubts whatsoever that this year?s conference is going to surpass it. One of the primary reasons for this is one of our new speakers, Andrew J. Bacevich, whose talk I am certain will absolutely captivate the audience.
Why did we invite Andrew to speak at this conference? Primarily because of his vocal, eloquent, and well-reasoned opposition to the philosophy of empire and interventionism that unfortunately continues to hold our nation in its grip.
But what will give real power to Andrew?s speech will be his personal background.
A graduate of the U.S. Military Academy, Andrew was a soldier by profession. He served in Vietnam just after the Tet offensive.
He received his Ph.D in American diplomatic history from Princeton and now teaches history and international relations at Boston University.
Last year Andrew suffered the worst tragedy that can ever befall a parent when his son was killed in Iraq in a war that Andrew has long opposed. He wrote about that wrenching experience in an extremely moving piece that appeared in the Washington Post entitled ?I Lost My Son to a War I Oppose. We Were Both Doing Our Duty.?
We are both excited and honored that Andrew has accepted our invitation to speak at the conference. His speech will almost certainly be a conference highlight. As I?ve stated before, this is one conference you do not want to miss, and this is one speech you do not want to miss.
If you?d like to do a bit of home study before coming to the conference, posted below are links to a sampling of articles by Andrew Bacevich, two interviews of him, and links to the books he has published. Many of the articles have appeared in past issues of our FFF Email Update.
The conference will be held on June 6-8 (Friday morning through Sunday night) at the Hyatt Regency Reston in Reston, Virginia, one of the nicest areas of northern Virginia. (It?s best to fly into Dulles Airport.) The conference price is $495, which includes all Hyatt Regency meals ? breakfast, lunch, and dinner ? during the 3 days of the conference plus admission to all 19 speeches.
To register for the conference, go to our conference website or call us at 703-934-6101. Remember to make your hotel reservations at the Hyatt Regency Reston after you register for the conference; be sure to mention the FFF conference to secure the special discounted rate of $150 per night.
