This will be the first of hopefully many chances we will have to meet the various candidates running for local office. Bruce Graham is a local attorney who is running for Judge of Superior Court 5. He is running in the Republican Primary against incumbant Les Meade.
I have scheduled this meetup after Spring Break in order to give student the opportunity to attend. This is an opportunity we have to meet the candidates informally, find out what their platforms are, and ask questions. Since we only have about an hour and a half at the library, I felt that we should only schedule one candidate per meeting.
Each of us should generate questions to ask each candidate ahead of time. Be mindful of the responsibilities of each particular elected office. Do research on your own ahead of time. The questions we will want to ask a candidate for judge should be different than the questions asked of a councilman, mayoral, etc.
We should also be respectful of the candidates and their positions, even if we disagree. Remember, this is not a forum to try to convince, we want to find out what they think. Also, as we do not want the candidates to "tell us what we want to hear", we should keep our views and positions fairly guarded, understanding that they should know what we believe based on who we are.
I would like to see a good attendance at these events. A large turnout will affect the candidates' impression of how big the 'Ron Paul Revolution' is. Even if, and this is directed largely at the students, you aren't going to vote in the primary here, it is a great opportunity to get involved in the local political scene. You will be able to take your experiences here with you after your time here at Purdue.
Please RSVP this event, as I would like to have an idea as to how many are going to attend.
