A spark from a firestorm of protest against the federal government’s bailout and spending plans will land in Meadville’s Diamond Park April 19 from noon to 4 p.m.

Two veterans of local tax protests in the early 2000s — Mike Easton and Tony Hromek — are organizing the event in conjunction with a nationwide movement of TEA parties.

Drawing their name from a famous scene from American history — when colonists dumped tea into Boston Harbor to protest a tax illegally imposed by the British— most of the Taxed Enough Already, or TEA, parties are scheduled for the federal and state tax filing deadline of April 15. The movement’s Web site, teapartyday.com, lists 1,425 organizers putting together events across the country.

“We want to send a message to Washington — a bipartisan message — directed at the Obama administration, and the message is that when you find yourself in a hole, quit digging,” Easton said. “We’re upset about the lack of transparency and accountability in these bailouts and spending. Where is the money going? They can’t even tell you. We have mortgaged our future clean down to our grandchildren.”
