The City of Oak Ridge has recently passed a city ordinance allowing for the installation of red light cameras at select busy intersections. This legislation was passed depsite firm opposition from members of this community who gave several reasons why it should not be implemented. Council, while not actually approving the implementation of these cameras, continues to press ahead despite this growing concern by the citizens.

Various issues, such as misguided motivations, potential conflict of interest, costs of implementation, safety, and legal precendent need to be illuminated as council continues to push ahead with this proposal. The Oak Ridge chapter of the Tennessee Liberty Alliance, will present an informational meeting for the public to address each of these issues, and provide legal, scientific and financial data regarding the use of red light cameras.

The meeting will be held at 7pm, Thursday night, May 15th at the Wildcat Den located on the corner of Robertsville Road and the Oak Ridge Turnpike. A representative from the city has been invited to speak and/or answer questions. Guest speakers will include Ron Brown and Dale Gedcke. Local members of the TLA will also speak and field questions and comments from the participants.

Please join us for a very informative night.

What did you all think of the coverage in the Oak Ridger? Since I couldn't make it to the meeting, I only read about it.

I think this is an important meeting because of its potential to educate us about how local government can implement practices that are counterproductive to a cooperative, civil society. It positions municipal government advisarily to the community.

Who attended?

    •  Very informative and brought up points about this issue I was not aware of. Great presentation by the participants and VERY well attended by members of the Oak Ridge community and government.
    •  Great information and a good opportunity for many to talk.
    •  The key speaker should try to target his speech toward the common person. A few of those I saw appeared to be lost and we need to reach as many as possible.
    •  Just what was needed. It was also great that some of the City Administration attended.
