x-posted to Ron Paul meetup #157 (Memphis TN)
This is the best idea I've had for continuing the fight?? Hi, not an active participant here, but it seemed like a good forum to float the idea. Currently I'm an unchurched Christian, but officially I'm a (inactive) latter-day saint aka mormon. Having practiced in a devout way for 6+ years, my take on an LDS perspective, doctrinally Ron Paul is the only candidate, and with Romney out of the race, Paul should get the devout LDS vote. Not the popular LDS vote!! Too many care for nothing but appearances or they wouldn't have supported Romney to begin with. Those people will vote Obama or McCain. But if we can get his message out to the right people? One of the questions that would have to be answered is what happens to Romney's delegates? Are they still IN, do they still matter, do they still have votes? Assuming they were still going to be at the convention voting, I'm thinking about the delegate strategy. I know (as in would recognize them) a couple of the people who were running as Romney delegates in my county. Actually one of the guys that didn't win married my husband and I 12 years ago in March. In the Tennessee 9th district where I live, two Romney supporters won delegate positions. Bob McBride is a Romney delegate who won one of the three positions in district 9 and I know he is devout LDS. What if every meetup in the country went through all the ballots for Romney's delegates names, and sent out letters to the Romney delegates who won- targeted to LDS supporters, asking for them to consider Ron Paul?? Of course this is assuming that the majority of Romney supporters are LDS, but since Romney himself makes that assumption, is it hurting anyone? Surely Romney won quite a few delegates in Super Tuesday right? What if every Romney delegate got a letter with convincing doctrinal reasons to vote for Ron Paul? Those of you who are not LDS, it is prohibited to endorse a specific candidate- thus the church did not endorse Romney, and will not endorse anyone else. There is no reason for these delegates to NOT put their support behind Ron Paul. There are plenty of open letters to LDS on behalf of Ron Paul out there, it shouldn't be too hard to cull half a dozen of the best quotes, it's just editing it together and getting people involved. I'm not sure I'm the right person for the job, but I'm interested in what people think, if it would be a worthwhile strategy. Please reply!! Maybe I'll lay it out on RonPaulForums too. Here in Utah, our national delegates haven't been elected yet. They'll be elected by our state delegates, who will be elected at precinct caucuses. Even though Romney has withdrawn from the race, these national delegates will still have to vote for him on their first ballot; after that, though, they'll be free to vote for whomever they please.
