So, what is the purpose of the caucus and what will happen (high level, not details) in the caucus?

Below is a brief high level description of the:

The caucus in general
What actions a Ron Paul supporter hopefully will take

The caucus serves two primary functions:

Proposing platform resolutions
Selecting delegates to the County Convention

Platform resolutions:

These are concepts/ideas/principles that, if adopted, represent the recommendations that are pushed up to the next higher body. (Precinct->County->State->National)

On February 9th we will see platform issues presented, discussed, and then voted on.

Delegate selection:

The precinct elects (in a formal procedure at the caucus) delegates to the County Convention . Each delegate represents one vote, which, in theory, may be cast for any candidate the delegate chooses. In practice, candidates state their voting preference and the caucus participants vote for (or not for) them based on this preference. Typically, delegates are true to their declaration, even though there is no formal binding.

Each precinct has a fixed quota of delegates.

Every attendee is eligible to become a delegate. You may nominate yourself or someone else. After all nominations have been made, each attendee casts as many votes as there delegate slots to fill. Those with the most votes fill the positions. There is a similar vote for alternate delegates.

Precinct caucus selected delegates attend the County Convention and form the voting body at the convention. Pretty much the same thing happens: delegates are selected for the State Convention; at the State Convention delegates are selected for the National Convention.

Ron Paul supporter actions:

· Importance of attendance
We want RP minded delegates to get all delegate slots. Because delegates are voted on directly by the caucus attendees, those with the greatest following present will win the most delegates.

· Who can come
Any registered voter can come. Be sure that you bring a picture ID. You need not be a Republican Party member, but you must sign a declaration that you will not participate in the caucus of any other party. Bring as many legitimate supporters as you can. Your dedication will make a difference for years to come.

· Nominations
You can nominate: yourself, or someone else.
So as not to dilute the vote between RP delegates, be sure to nominate only as many RP supporters as there are delegate slots. You see, it is important to have enough RP supporters that all delegate slots can be covered. So, for this purpose, as well as to obtain a majority, bring as many RP supporters to the caucus as you can.

· Voting for delegates
Of course, vote only for RP candidates. (When nominations are made, it might help you to keep track of who is for whom by writing down the names of the RP candidates.) If you can vote for, say four delegates (the number allocated to your precinct), but only three RP supporters have been nominated then only vote for the three and do not cast the fourth vote. Do not vote for anyone who refuses to state their preferences, even undecided.

Send me an email if you have questions. If you have not yet decided whether you will come, please consider making the commitment to attend. At this point you have leverage because your vote will count far more heavily than in the primary (it?s like pot odds in Poker J).

Best wishes to you all,

Arne Mortensen
