The subject line was, "Are you for the people or not ?"

Congresswoman Giffords,

Its clear from your support of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, and Obama's Generations Invigorating Volunteerism and Education Act, that you believe in expanding the powers of government - apparently because you believe that the role of government is to help people solve their problems.

I am not writing this EMAIL to dispute this point with you, because there are people on both sides of the debate as to whether government's redistribution of wealth really helps society, or is just a sign of increasing government interference in people's lives.

However, one issue that is worthy of debate - particularly with those like yourself who believe government powers should be expanded - is whether or not government can be trusted with the increasing amount of power it assumes. This is a very important question, especially when directed towards someone like yourself - who has played a role in expanding those powers.

Let me get to the point. I have noticed that you have yet to join an increasing number of your peers, now 175 - including democrats from your own party- who have signed on as cosponsors to HR 1207, the Federal Reserve Transparency Act. As sponsor of HR 1207, Ron Paul has noted (see You Tube video of Ron Paul on CSPAN http://www.youtube.co... ), that even though Title 13 Chapter 7 subtitle 1 gives the GAO the authority to audit the Fed, in the following paragraph, it says that many important things - particularly transactions with foreign banks - are immune to audit.

Additionally - when Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke was directly questioned by Senator Bernie Sanders, about who the Fed loaned $1 trillion dollars to, Chairman Bernanke refused to give Senator Sanders a direct answer.

So again Congresswomen Giffords, I wanted to ask you - for someone who has supported the expansion of government powers, why you have not cosponsored a bill that would make who control's our nation's money supply subject to a greater amount of transparency ?

I have had discussions with members of my own political affiliation about your voting record. Even though I feel in my heart that you genuinely believe you are doing what you consider is in the best interests of this country - many who share my political views feel that you waiver on the issues, and can be swayed in one direction or another based on the influence of lobbyists. And many of them think you appear to be more concerned at times about what it might take to stay in office than about what is truly the right course of action.

Congresswoman Giffords, you certainly cannot satisfy everyone - and it is understandable that you might be concerned about what is in your best career interests. However, it seems to me that you lose nothing politically by signing on as a cosponsor of HR 1207. In fact, you might even stand something to gain from it - politically. I certainly know I would come to bat for you more if you offered your support of this as a cosponsor.

Thank you for your time,
Steven M. Stoltz
